Jesus Penaloza

August 24, 2010

Jesus Penaloza is an artist with a strange and unique outlook on life; this is can be witnessed through his paintings and murals. He finds inspiration in anything that strikes him as being visually appealing, particularly photographs.

He says, “I take an image and sometimes create a little story with it. Usually I find inspiration from found photos or National Geographic; those photos are awesome.”

These photographs can include people he knows intimately, such as his parents, or complete strangers found in the pages of a magazine. Rather than merely replicating the photographs into paint, Jesus creates vivacious representations of the subjects in the original photographs. He has created his own signature style.

In order to create these images, Jesus uses an assortment of tools and paints.

“Recently I’ve been using a lot of graphite pencil, oils, house paints, tempera paint, and water colors. I go back and forth between mediums,” he says.

Growing up in the Santa Clarita Valley has impacted Jesus’ life artistically. However, rather than being influenced by the architecture and the uniformity of suburbia, Jesus was influenced by the people that surrounded him. These people provided an escape to the stifling conformity.

“I feel lucky to have found these people with similar tastes in music, movies, and humor; without that influence I don’t think I would be pursuing art,” Jesus says.

Jesus currently lives in San Francisco; he moved to the Bay Area to escape “the ‘burbia.” Jesus’ art has expanded since moving to the city.

“San Francisco has been pretty good for me; there’s so much good art here, [so] it really motivates me to get better and keep producing pieces. The demand for art here is crazy. There’s always some art show happening or a mural being made; it’s hard to keep up,” he claims.

Jesus plans to continue in the tradition of mural painting in San Francisco. He can be found at the Haight Street Art Walk on Friday evenings.

Jesus is a great guy, and has always had an individualistic confidence (at least since 7th grade when we met) that’s now manifested into some wonderful work. This article was encouraging and made me miss my friend.
